WILLIAM ORMAN

I am enclosing the Orman descendant outline from my earliest known ancestor as you suggested. I had hoped to extend it back a generation or so using the IGI etc , but that hasn't added any of my UK Ormans - although the known ones do appear there. What is more difficult is that there seem to be more Orman lines in England than I had at first thought though I haven't found any traces of continental origins working back to 1750 or so. So, I have no idea where they started. The parish records in my own home area (Fawley, Hampshire) show Ormans there as far back as that - and there even seem to be un-related lines there. Unfortunately, also, unlike the luck I have had with my own Shutler surname, I have only found US researchers interested in the Orman name. I have searched the Emigrants Books for the name and found none at all. The surname origin books I have seen so far (UK ones) don't quote the name as such. Ormonde (seems to be Irish-based) is the closest, and I couldn't find an Auman - I'm still trying to find this form in current UK telephone directories. However, I have been put into contact with several long forgotten Orman cousins as a result of my family enquiries, so a lot of good has resulted. The two William Orman's , Samuel, and Moses were associated with brickmaking at Lower Exbury in Hampshire (then called Exbury until 1830'ish), a small creek at the head of Beaulieu River. In fact in the 1841 census, Moses, at ten years of age, is put as ploughboy, his elder brother (12) as brickmaker. Later the Ormans moved a few miles to Langley, and West Common, where I lived in my youth, and they were brickmakers there. The earliest parish record reference I have in the area is to a Peter Orman (1730) but I haven't completed a search of the parish records and am hoping to be able to tie some loose ends. These records are back to about 1600.

I came across your page on the Google search of Exbury. I am the present owner and occupier of Lower Exbury House as mentioned by you. As a coincidence we used to employ one Denny Orman (sadly deceased around 1995) as the gardener to the house but were unaware of the earlier Orman link. He still has an extant sister who lives in Blackfield or Langley, but was resident at Exbury during the war, this is her tale:
An uncorroborated eyewitness report of strafing by the Nazis.
'6 year old Margaret Orman was returning from the school in Exbury to her home at Sturt Cottages. When she was about 100 yards from the house, a German bomber, possibly a Heinkel 111, flew over at tree top height, flames belching from the engines. The rear gunner opened fire on Margaret, luckily missing her. She thought the plane clipped the chimney from the cottage and crashed with a massive explosion in the field behind the house. The local taxi driver, Mr. Hart, came round the corner and took a shaken Margaret home.'
No other records exist of this incident. However, there were other verified reports of low level strafing of civilians in Holbury by the Nazis on the 21st August 1940. Also, a string of bombs were dropped on 26th May '42 at around 4 p.m., one of which landed on Sturt Lane, just behind the cottage.
This second attack provides the more likely explanation of the subsequent explosion- that the plane dropped one of its bomb close by, the blast making the chimney collapse or hitting it with the machine gun fire.
Denny was a quiet man who always wore a funny hat, rather like a gnome.
A new record (in fact it is a very old record) of life on the Exbury Estate has recently turned up at Exbury, namely the ledger kept by the Mitford family who acquired the estate in 1726 and it contains details of all the people living on the estate at time of purchase and goes back, quite often to the 1600's. This is a most comprehensive record of the time.
If you respond and if I remember I will do more research in the book- it is nearly 100 pages of copperplate handwriting, sometimes quite hard to decifer with all manner of detail.

My sister wrote to you some time ago regarding the Orman's of England. I am sorry to say that she did not follow up the information, so here goes. I think it might be of some interest you. I have not managed to get very far back with family tree. I hope this information might add to your List of Orman's. It seems that there are not many of us in either England or Scotland. but I will do the same as you. And will keep looking.
Thomas Orman married Marion Jackson June 1st 1821 in Midlothian, Penicuik.
Marion is the daughter of William Robertson and Euphemia Waterson.
Child of Thomas and Marion is William Orman born 1827. Married Janet Robertson June 4th 1860 in the United Presbyterian Church, North Berwick, Scotland.

John Burns Orman Joiner Journeyman (served apprenticeship) married Mary Morrison September 28 1888 Daughter of Robert Morrison and Helen Robertson.
